In Taekwondo sparring you are either using attack or defensive movements. Being able to step forward or backward strategically will allow you to execute your movements more effectively. In Taekwondo, we are taught a method of doing this so that you will not lose your balance and can reduce the chance of any injury as well as be more likely to score points during sparring sessions.
The video demonstration below shows how and when you can use the step forward or step backward technique. These steps will come much more naturally to you after attending classes for a while because, these stances are practiced over and over again.
