Back in 2019 we told you about a new series, Cobra Kai which was a Karate Kid reboot with the main characters all grown up. At the time it was only available to YouTube Premium members but now, the series has been moved to Netflix.
If you haven’t seen the first two seasons, go log in to your Netflix account now and watch them because there are some spoiler alerts coming in this post. Then come back here.
So to summarize the first two seasons of the Cobra Kai series, we are introduced to a new generation of karate kids. Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso are all grown up and are still rivals. However, the series looks at their relatiship from a totally different angle.
What if, Daniel was the one who was the bully in the original karate kid movie? After all, he stole Johnny’s girlfriend, his adult friend and karate mentor Mr Myagi beat up Johnny and his friends, Daniel gave Johnny a soaker in the washroom at the Halloween dance and then, Daniel and Mr Myagi picked a fight with the Cobrai Kai karate team.
All these years later, our loyalties towards the original hero, Daniel begin to shift. Poor Johnny can never catch a break and now, Daniel has befriended Johnny’s estranged son and further drives a wedge between them. Seems kinda mean but it depends on the perspective you take.
From Johnny’s perspective, Daniel is the bully and it’s the other way around from Daniel’s perspective. But these two might have been able to forge a friendship had they left their emotions and preconceived ideas about each other out of things and talked it out.
Although then, we would not have such a great reboot series to watch.
In the real world though, martial arts training teaches us to be fair and to settle conflicts with our words first. Martial arts training should only be used as a defense outside of the do jang and never to bully anyone.
The end of Season 2 which aired mid-2019, was a cliff hanger for sure. And Cobra Kai season 3 was originally supposed to air in 2020 but…with Covid-19 things got pushed out. The good news is that season 3 is set to be released on Netlfix in 2021 and we can hardly wait!
Enjoy the video below which has a short Cobra Kai season 3 trailer towards the end 🙂
